Cabot Weekly Review (Video)

In this week’s stock market video, Mike Cintolo discusses the super-strong bull market and his thoughts going forward—there continue to be some near-term yellow flags, so it’s important to keep your feet on the ground, but there remain a ton of stocks acting well and, impressively, many that only recently emerged to new highs. As usual, he presents a broad list of names that could be actionable, especially if the market finally takes a breather.

Cabot Growth Investor

Bi-weekly Update January 9: Remain bullish, but keep your wits about you. The market remains very strong, and Mike is glad to see many of our stocks that consolidated during December come to life in recent days. That said, the indexes are very stretched, so while you should hang onto your strong, profitable performers, it also makes sense to remain choosy on the buy side. In the Model Portfolio, Mike is pleased with what we own, but he’s going to again sit on the current cash position (17%) as there aren’t many good-looking entry points among growth stocks right here.

Bi-weekly Issue January 2: The market’s outlook hasn’t changed much during the past couple of weeks (longer-term, it’s definitely a bull market, though shorter-term, the odds favor some trickier trading going forward) so our portfolio hasn’t changed much, either. Mike is still mostly invested, but holding a chunk of cash (17%) as he looks for (a) some steam to come off the market and/or (b) some stocks we’re eyeing to offer entry points. He’s generally happy with our current crop of stocks, and as he’s written before, thinks we own some of the leaders of this move. But he’s not complacent, either. That said, right now, Mike is content to observe how things go—January is often a tricky month, and letting things settle out for a bit is usually the right thing to do. He has no changes tonight.

Other Stocks of Interest January 2: Follow ups to stocks featured August 13, 2019 (issue 1426) to January 2, 2020 (issue 1436). Since many of the stocks written about in Other Stocks of Interest don’t make their way into the Model Portfolio, you won’t see them followed on a regular basis in the issues. However, we are monitoring these stocks, and this listing gives you a quick view of our latest thoughts. Feel free to email me directly (mike@cabotwealth.com) with any questions/comments you have.

Cabot Top Ten Trader

Movers & Shakers January 10: Mike remains bullish, and we’re likely to keep our Market Monitor at a level 8. That said, with the environment getting hot and heavy, and with things thinning out a little (referring to the small- and mid-cap indexes), be sure to keep your feet on the ground and be choosy on the buy side. His buy ideas today are: Aecom Technology (ACM), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Seattle Genetics (SGEN). Mike has two sells today: Arconic (ARNC) and Carvana (CVNA).

Weekly Issue January 6: Mike remains bullish, but continues to advise picking your spots—many stocks have etched nice month-long rest periods, though some others probably need time to consolidate. This week’s list has a bunch of names that haven’t appeared in Top Ten for a long time (if ever). His Top Pick is Alibaba (BABA), which has finally kicked back into gear after a long time in the wilderness. Try to buy on dips.

Cabot Undervalued Stocks Advisor

Special Bulletin January 9: The Financial Times reported this morning that Voya Financial (VOYA) was in talks, in late December, to possibly be acquired by AIG, Prudential Financial Group or Prudential Financial. The stock rose to new highs in December, and is rising again this morning. The news article speculated that the company could sell for $10 billion, which would translate to approximately $74 per share. Crista’s Strong Buy recommendation remains intact.

Monthly Issue January 8: We are almost past a very quiet time period on Wall Street that featured a lack of major company news, M&A activity and earnings reports. As such, this will likely be the last recent issue where Crista has had to scour the internet for new information on our portfolio companies. Today’s featured stocks are those that she senses are most likely to rise this month: AXA Equitable (EQH), Broadcom (AVGO), LGI Homes (LGIH) and Tyson Foods (TSN). Today’s portfolio changes are: Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) moves from Strong Buy to Buy, Designer Brands (DBI) from Hold to Buy and Mosaic Company (MOS) from Hold to Buy.

Weekly Update December 31: There was very little news or new analyst research on our portfolio stocks last week. Crista expects a surge in new information by mid-January as businesspeople and Wall Street analysts get back to work after the holidays. In the meantime, her weekly updates will include any of our companies that had meaningful news, or changes in earnings estimates or share prices. Here are today’s portfolio changes: Corteva Inc. (CTVA) moves from Buy to Hold and General Motors (GM) joins the Buy Low Opportunities Portfolio as a Buy.

Cabot Stock of the Week

Weekly Issue January 6: The broad market remains strong, and all Cabot’s market timing indicators are currently positive, so Tim remains optimistic that we’ll see higher prices in the month ahead. This week’s recommendation, Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX), is a growth-oriented medical stock with great potential; it was originally recommended by Mike Cintolo last November and it’s currently hitting new highs. Tim has one portfolio change today: Digital Turbine (APPS) moves from Hold to Sell.

Cabot Global Stocks Explorer

Bi-weekly Issue January 9: As we head into 2020, emerging markets are at the top of the Cabot Global Stocks Explorer menu after developing a nice uptrend in the fourth quarter of 2019. In addition, they are cheap—trading at a substantial discount to U.S. markets on a valuation basis. Carl’s new idea today Ping An (PNGAY), a stock that is at the sweet spot of several powerful trends in China and has delivered steady and substantial profits to shareholders over the past five years. He has one portfolio change today: DBS Bank (DBSDY) moves from Buy a Half to Hold.

Bi-weekly Update January 2: Carl is looking forward to putting some new ideas in front of you in the coming year, but today, he takes a look at how global markets fared in 2019. For the most part, global stock markets performed strongly in 2019. He has has one portfolio change today: Grupo Televisa (TV) moves from Hold a Half To Sell.

Cabot Dividend Investor

Monthly Issue January 8: In this issue Tom highlights a shipping stock that has remained profitable and paid dividends every single quarter through an industry depression. SFL Corp. Ltd. (SFL) is yielding a massive 9.6%. And industry conditions are improving. It may be 2020 in the overall market, but Tom found a place where it’s 2009 again. He has no portfolio changes today.

Weekly Update January 3: Tom says that for now, while the overall market is expensive and near an all-time high, there are still a lot of attractive opportunities, particularly in the long-neglected value stocks. There are also some powerful trends that should drive performance in certain areas of the market in the year ahead, like 5G and marijuana. He likes the way the current portfolio is positioned with safe plays in REITs and Utilities, several value stocks that have regained momentum, and 5G- and marijuana-related positions.

Cabot Marijuana Investor

Update January 9: Right now, the best-performing stocks in the portfolio are the lowest-risk stocks: the hydroponic garden supply company GrowGeneration (GRWG); the real estate company Innovative Industrial Properties (IIPR) and the old tobacco firm Turning Point Brands (TPB). Eventually, however, growth will once again be rewarded, so Tim continues to hold the best and fastest-growing companies in the sector—in appropriate amounts. The portfolio is 24% in cash now, and that seems fine as we wait for the sector to strengthen. The only change with this update is that Trulieve (TCNNF) is downgraded to Hold.

Monthly Issue December 26: Generally, pruning losers and weak stocks and replacing them with strong stocks is the recipe for success. Tim added two new stocks to the portfolio last week, and if you feel underinvested in cannabis stocks, you can add any of the stocks that look attractive. But the portfolio still has 25% in cash, waiting until the sector strengthens, and he expects that to be soon!

Cabot Early Opportunities

Special Bulletin January 10: Shares of Cyroport (CYRX) have traded all over the map today after the company reported preliminary Q4 results that came in lighter than expected. Management says it sees Q4 revenue of $9.2 million (up 61%) versus expectations of $10.4 million, and that full-year 2019 revenue would be around $33.9 million (up 73%) versus $35.1 million expected. Official results will come out on March 5. Tyler will act based on the stock’s action. Accordingly, for now, CYRX moves to HOLD.

Monthly Issue December 18: In this month’s Issue of Cabot Early Opportunities Tyler takes a closer look at recent recommendations and evaluates their Q3 earnings reports. He also shows why he thinks the Small cap index is going higher in the near term. And he features five early-stage growth stocks going after totally different markets that look poised to deliver big gains in 2020 and beyond. His top pick this month is LeMaitre Vascular (LMAT), a Massachusetts-based medical device company with a market cap of $710 million.

Weekly Issue January 7: The Stock – Scorpio Tankers (STNG) Scorpio Tankers has the largest (124 ships on the water, 10 more newbuilds under construction) and most modern fleet (average ship is four years old) of product tankers, shipping oil and other petroleum products.

Position Update January 3: In light of last night’s events in the Middle East, and this morning’s market declines, Jacob wanted to update where we stand with our Cabot Profit Booster positions. The good news, despite today’s wobbles, is that all are working very well!

Monthly Issue December 18: We’ve had a decent month in the markets—despite all the impeachment hoopla. It looks like the China trade issue is improving, housing starts and building permits are healthy, and unemployment remains low. Sounds like the making of a great holiday season! Nancy begins this issue with her Spotlight Stock, General Dynamics Corporation (GD), a company that has been in business for 67 years, residing in the defense and aerospace sectors. As as she notes in her Feature article, both of those arenas are experiencing fantastic growth, which bodes well for GD.

Cabot Profit Booster

Question: I’m a sub to the Cabot Profit Booster (enjoying it!) however am new to ‘options.’ My basic(?) question is: Since PAAS is trading significantly above the option’s strike price, why?) wouldn’t the ‘option holder’ exercise PRIOR to assignment and call away the stock from us? I know they have the ‘right’ but is their an incentive for them to simply wait?

Jacob: First off Welcome to Cabot Profit Booster, and the world of options! I applaud you for “making the jump”. First off VERY rarely does a trader exercise his right to buy the stock before expiration. Its about math/odds. The issue is with two weeks until January option there still is an approximate 17% chance that PAAS will close below 22 on that Friday. That is the main reason he won’t exercise early. And because of that 17% chance, there still is $0.10 of value for Profit Booster subscribers to capture on this trade.Keep the questions coming ... the options education component is one of my favorite parts of my role at Cabot.
